Supplement Safety for Seniors (65+)

Adults over 65 are the largest consumers of dietary supplements — and face the highest risk of adverse effects. Age-related changes in metabolism, kidney function, and medication use make supplement safety especially important.

Special Risks for Older Adults

Vitamin K + Blood Thinners

Vitamin K directly affects warfarin (Coumadin) effectiveness. Consistency matters more than avoidance — but any changes should be discussed with your doctor.

Calcium + Iron

Seniors often take both calcium and iron supplements. Calcium blocks iron absorption — separate by at least 2 hours.

Excessive Vitamin D

Many seniors take high-dose vitamin D for bone health. Excess can cause hypercalcemia, worsened by calcium supplements. Stay within UL (4,000 IU/day US/EU; 800 IU/day China).

Duplicate Ingredients

Seniors often take a multivitamin plus individual supplements. This can lead to double-dosing zinc, iron, vitamin A, or other nutrients without realizing it.
