What Is a Supplement Interactions Checker?

A supplement interactions checker looks up documented interactions between vitamins, minerals, or herbal supplements. Unlike drug interaction checkers, NutriAudit focuses on known supplement-to-supplement pairs — for example, calcium may interfere with iron absorption, high-dose zinc may affect copper status, and vitamin D3 and K2 may work together. Lack of database coverage does not establish safety; interpret results with a doctor or pharmacist.

How Supplement Interactions Work

Supplement interactions occur when two or more ingredients affect each other's absorption, metabolism, or effectiveness. These can be negative (reducing absorption or causing side effects) or positive (enhancing benefits when taken together).

Types of Interactions

  • Absorption EffectsOne ingredient may affect the absorption of another (e.g., calcium might interfere with iron absorption)
  • CompetitionTwo minerals compete for the same absorption pathway (e.g., Iron and Zinc)
  • Dose ContextThe same pair may need a different interpretation at different doses or in a different diet and product context
  • Side EffectsCombining certain supplements increases risk of adverse effects

Common High-Risk Interactions

  • Iron + Zinc — higher supplemental doses may affect absorption; ask a doctor or pharmacist whether timing matters for you
  • Calcium + Iron — calcium may interfere with iron absorption; consider taking them at different times of day
  • Vitamin E + Vitamin K — high-dose Vitamin E may interfere with Vitamin K clotting function
  • High-dose Zinc + Copper — long-term high zinc intake may affect copper status
